In 2008 we made a bold commitment to reduce our carbon emissions by 30 per cent per full-time employee (FTE) over three years.
We are pleased to announce that we have met this target, cutting emissions from 5.7 tonnes per FTE to 3.7 tonnes, in effect a reduction over three years of 35 per cent. We achieved this through significant reductions in emissions from our buildings (which account for about 55 per cent of total emissions), cuts in air travel (30 per cent) and cuts in waste and land travel (10 per cent).
In addition, SKM invested in Renewable Energy Certificates, purchased from a wind farm in Victoria, Australia.
Our journey to meeting the target – applying our technical, intellectual and creative talents – has provided us with valuable insights in emissions reduction that we can share with our clients and partners.
It has also provided a solid platform on which to further develop our emissions reduction strategies, which include our Carbon Fund, a sustainable travel program and a staff personal emissions calculator and pledge program.
