Infrastructure Design Automation

Sinclair Knight Merz has been responsible for over 100 power distribution projects at voltages up to 66kV involving overhead lines, cables, switchyards, and substations in urban, suburban and rural settings. The work has included:

  • Substation automation and design for automatic switching and Transformer Master/Follower Auto/Manual and tap changer controls
  • Electronic interfaces for reclosers, switches, and Intelligent Electronic Devices (smart instruments, meters, protection equipment)
  • Studies to determine duty ratings, voltage levels, stability requirements, and load transfer capabilities
  • Transient suppression (shunts, load banks, static VAR compensators)
  • Fault locaters, sequence of events recording and transient analysis metering
  • Co-generation impacts
  • Voltage drop compensation and power factor correction.

Our engineers understand the operation of distribution systems, from both the equipment and systems points of view, under all loading conditions.
