The 1st Airfield Defence Squadron (1AFDS) had been based in RAAF Base Edinburgh in temporary dispersed facilities since its relocation from RAAF Base Tindal two years earlier. Changes in 1AFDS responsibilities as well as future planned increases in manpower required that new facilities were provided for 1AFDS within RAAF Base Edinburgh.
The objective of this commission was to prepare a user requirement and supporting cost estimates for new working accommodation for 1AFDS.
Sinclair Knight Merz was appointed as the project planning consultant to analyse the facilities requirements of 1AFDS. Our work as a project consultant for the Amberley Redevelopment (where facilities for sister units, 2AFDS and 3AFDS, were designed and built) provided very useful background reference material.
As part of the development of the cost estimates, Sinclair Knight Merz reviewed master planning constraints, examined broad approaches and options (new buildings, refurbishment and temporary arrangements) and prepared a number of concept plans based on the provision of new and refurbished buildings in accordance with relevant industry and Commonwealth standards. In all, 10 feasible options were identified and costed.
