Aircraft Fire Training Simulator

Sinclair Knight Merz provided project consultancy services for the design and construction of an Aircraft Fire Training Simulator forming part of the Fire Training Simulator complex at RAAF Base Amberley.

The Aircraft Fire Trainer is LPG fuelled and fully computer controlled. A water drenching system, that is automatically activated when the simulator is in use, protects its exterior. The trainer is representative of a Boeing 737 and offers a range of fire and major incident training scenarios. Three types of fire are currently available:

  • Wing Section and Engine Fire – designed to provide training in control and extinguishment of high bypass jet engine fires.
  • Wheel/Brake Fire – designed to provide training in cooling overheated brakes and extinguishment of fires that occur if brakes are not properly cooled.
  • Interior Cabin Fire – designed to provide training in control and extinguishment of large-scale aircraft cabin fires that may have resulted from fuel leaks or flammable cargo.

A non-toxic smoke generator within the cabin provides additional reality and training opportunities. Gas detection systems, rapid ventilation and automatic and emergency shut down are among the safety features of the installation.

The project consultancy services provided by Sinclair Knight Merz included taking the project through PWC; representing Defence’s interests and administration of the Managing Contractor Contract; ensuring Defence received value for money and ensuring probity of the process of delivery of the project.
