Sinclair Knight Merz provided project consultancy services for the upgrading and refurbishment of the Airfield Defence Wing facilities at RAAF Base Amberley. The project was carried out in two parts. First, new facilities were provided for the two Airfield Defence Squadrons, 2AFDS and 3AFDS, followed by a refurbishment of the Headquarters Building.

The new facility for 2AFDS and 3AFDS comprised a 56 m x 110 m complex incorporating office accommodation, training rooms, amenities and break-out areas and individual caged storage for kit and personnel equipment. Covered parking bays were also provided for each squadron.

The refurbishment of the existing Airfield Defence Wing Headquarters involved demolition of selected partitions and ceilings within the existing buildings, with the intent to re-use as much as possible. Changes to the electrical, communications and mechanical systems were made to upgrade the functionality of the building. All existing floor coverings were removed and replaced. During the refurbishment works, the headquarters communications room had to remain fully operational to maintain computer and phone services to the new 2&3 AFDS facility completed earlier.

The project consultancy services provided by Sinclair Knight Merz included:

  • taking the project through PWC
  • representing Defence’s interests and administration of the Managing Contractor Contract
  • ensuring Defence received value for money from the Managing Contractor
  • ensuring probity of the process of delivery of the project.
