In August 2003, Sinclair Knight Merz completed the EPCM implementation of the Area C iron ore and associated infrastructure project as part of the Mine and Port Developments Joint Venture (MP DJV).

The MPDJV, a 50/50 joint venture between SKM and Fluor Australia, was engaged by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in 2001 to carry out the feasibility and cost estimation studies of the Project. Subsequently, the MPDJV was awarded the EPCM implementation phase in early 2002, to be carried out in parallel with the Products and Capacity Expansion (PA CE) Project at Port Hedland.

Area C was a “greenfields” development, incorporating ore processing and handling, with a wide range of infrastructure and services. Ore is delivered from the open cut mine to the 15Mdt/a capacity process plant where it is crushed and screened to produce lump and fines products. These products are stockpiled and reclaimed to the train loadout system, for transport to the port facilities at Port Hedland.

In addition to the process plant, the project covers a wide range of infrastructure including power, water supply, airstrip, access roads, accommodation village and site buildings.

The project was completed ahead of schedule and below budget, with no lost time injuries. During 2004 the MPDJV undertook the EPCM implementation of the expansion of Area C to a capacity of 22Mdt/a.

The involvement of SKM in this project demonstrates:

  • Strategic partnerships achieving best solutions for the client
  • Expertise in investigating feasibility and cost estimation across numerous options
  • Ability to deliver projects on time, on budget and safely
