BHP Mini Mill Rooty Hill Australia

Project Highlight - BHP Mini Mill Rooty Hill Australia

BHP's Sydney Mini Mill occupies a 40 ha site at Rooty Hill, in Sydney's western suburbs, and is adjacent to Eastern Creek. Processes at the mill include scrap iron delivery and processing, a melt shop housing an electric arc furnace, a casting area and a product storage area. The mill was designed to meet strict environmental controls, including stringent requirements for noise attenuation.

Sinclair Knight Merz was involved in four areas of the mill development:

  • traffic investigations and recommendations for access to the site
  • concepts and designs for stormwater management and drainage, along with the design of construction roads and final roads in the plant
  • the design of equipment foundations within the mill
  • assistance to BHP in the management of the design and construction process.

The firm's input has been invaluable in the provision of traffic information for the Environmental Impact Study and the later commission of inquiry. Sinclair Knight Merz also played a significant role in relation to the integration of civil works and drainage works into the mill on a reasonably constrained site, and the completion of equipment foundation designs on schedule to allow related building work to continue.

The participation of Sinclair Knight Merz in the BHP Mini Mill project brings the following benefits to your project:
