Bangalore Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation, India

The project goal was to improve local capacity for the delivery of water supply, sewerage and environmental sanitation services to Bangalore, with a (then) population of 5 million people. Emphasis was placed on assisting particularly the urban poor and other vulnerable groups, in keeping with a long term environmental, economic, social and institutional sustainability.

Outcomes of this project this project included: 

  • Providing appropriate service delivery mechanisms to improve the availability of water and sanitation services to the urban-poor and slum dwellers. In particular, identified improvements to the policies and procedures for the establishment, operation, and maintenance of the public standpipe system 
  • Regulations, policies and procedures were identified to reverse the deterioration of ground water quality and halt the over-exploitation of the ground water resource
  • Enhanced understanding of the benefits to public health and of health education programs arising from the improvements in services and the urban environment.

SKM was the Managing Contractor of Bangalore Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation Master Plan Project. SKM was responsible for project management, risk and quality control of all project inputs and deliverables.
