Sinclair Knight Merz undertook the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) of a materials handling expansion of the Port Hedland iron ore processing and export facility. The project aimed to eliminate bottlenecks and increase throughput capacity at the site from 52 to 64 Mtpa.
The project comprised:
- A new two cell 10,000 tph rotary dumper
- 21 conveyors with a total length of 3.4 km, including new conveyor links (with modifications to existing sample stations and new sample feed conveyors)
- An upgrade of the Plant 2 crushing and screening facility throughput
- A conveyor link from South Yard to the Finucane Island tunnel
- 11 kV power distribution enhancements.
The project won an Engineering Excellence Award in the Resources category from the Western Australian Division of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, and a Gold Award of Merit in the Multi-disciplinary category at the Association of Consulting Engineers Australia’s Awards for Excellence.
