Boyne Smelters Limited commissioned the SN C-Lavalin/SKM Joint Venture for the preparation of a pre-feasibility and feasibility study, aimed at examining various options for the replacement of the existing Anode Baking Furnaces 1 and 2 located at Gladstone, Queensland.
The PFS assessed the following key issues:
- Technical advantages and disadvantages
- Capital and operating costs to an accuracy of +/- 20%
- Project implementation schedule and constraints
- Risk profile
- Sustainability analysis
- Feasibility study execution plan.
Resulting from the assessment of key merits/issues of each option, the recommendation for a “go forward” option to be taken into the Feasibility study phase was replacing the existing furnaces using new “open” technology in a new building constructed to the north of the existing anode baking furnace 3.
This option includes the following facilities:
- “Open” Technology for the furnace operation
- Furnace Tending Assembly
- Anode handling systems to tie into the existing operation
- Fume treatment centre for treatment of emissions
- Building (280m long x 36m wide x 24m high).
The EPCM execution phase is currently underway with a first baked anode aimed at October 2010. |
