Central Visayas Water and Sanitation Project

 Central Visayas Water Project

Central Visayas Water and Sanitation Project, Philippines - Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

The Central Visayas Water and Sanitation Project was directed towards improving planning, design, implementation, operation and maintenance for the improvement of health and strengthening community participation and management of water and sanitation schemes.  Sinclair Knight Merz was fully responsible for all project management of each of the project components listed above.

In the project region, 55 percent of all households, and less than 50 percent of rural households, have access to improved water supplies.  Diseases related to poor water and sanitation contribute significantly to illness and death, particularly among young children from poorer households.

The project comprised of three components:

  • Planning & Monitoring: improved information systems and planning and management procedures.
  • Infrastructure: implementation and rehabilitation of selected schemes and the preparation of masterplans for two areas.
  • Communities: establishment and training of water organisations for schemes implemented under the project, increasing community participation in planning, implementation, operation and maintenance, and improving household practices.
