Sinclair Knight Merz was engaged by the turnkey contractor, Detroit Engine & Turbine Company (DETCO), to provide engineering, procurement and contract management services for a 2 x 5MW cogeneration facility at Unichema, Port of Melbourne. The facility includes two 5MW steam injected gas turbines with two 32t/h supplementary fired waste heat steam generators. Two gas fired high pressure packaged boilers, each rated at 10t/h and 70bar were also provided with optional waste fuel oil (tallow) firing capability. The plant also consumes 10,000m3/h of odorous factory off-gas in the HP boilers.
The facility provided by Cogenco supplies all of the electrical and steam requirements to the Unichema plant via long term energy supply agreements and was a first of its kind in Australia.
As Project Manager, the role of Sinclair Knight Merz was crucial to delivering the project according to the tight schedule agreed with the project lenders.
Sinclair Knight Merz is currently providing on-going advisory services to Cogenco as part of a longer term technical advisory role.
