Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM ) was engaged to carry out the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) for the upgrade of Hamersley Iron’s port at Dampier as part of its expansion project. The project was divided into two phases: Phase A and Phase B.
The A$1 billion Phase A port expansion was designed to increase the port’s iron ore handling capacity from 72 million tonnes a year to 116 million tonnes, which was successfully achieved in late 2005 without any interruption to existing operations.
Phase A included a new car dumper, stockyard extension, seven kilometres of rail track, four stackers, reclaimer, screen house, lump rescreening plant and associated conveyors – some up to one kilometre long.
The upgrade also included the addition of a second ship loading facility. The wharf was extended by 450 metres to cater for a new berth, ship loader and wharf conveyor.
The A$1 billion Phase B was completed in late 2007 and replicated Phase A with the multiberth iron ore wharf extended by an additional 150 metres, allowing for the berthing of four 220,000 dead weight tonne large ‘Cape’ ships.
Phase B has further increased shipping capacity at Dampier to 140 million tonnes per annum.
Not only was Phase B completed on time and on budget but it achieved more than five million man hours worked without a lost time injury, the best result ever achieved on an SKM project to date.
The involvement of Sinclair Knight Merz in the Dampier Port Upgrade demonstrates:
- Leading edge project delivery skills
- Multi-disciplinary capability
- Capacity to deliver large scale projects
- Excellent safety standards.
