Sinclair Knight Merz carried out the civil, structural and hydraulic design of new and improved facilities for No. 6 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley. The squadron’s facilities had become cramped and dysfunctional, and were in need of major refurbishment. Many of the operational and administrative functions were being performed in demountable temporary accommodation clustered around the existing maintenance hangar and other poor quality workshops and stores.
The scope of new works included the provision of new annexes to the existing hangar, to provide the necessary accommodation for operational, administrative, training, workshops and supply functions. The provision of new pavements and the overlay of existing pavements to facilitate aircraft movements and the refurbishment of two existing Bellman Hangars to provide additional aircraft storage space.
Sinclair Knight Merz was responsible for the structural design of all buildings, pavement design and the design of all hydraulic services.
Particular attention was paid to the extremely reactive soils encountered at Amberley. The firm designed appropriate foundation systems to cope with the seasonal shrinking and swelling of the clay sub-grade.
The involvement of Sinclair Knight Merz in this project allows it to bring the following skills to your project:
- an understanding of Defence design standards
- experience in the design of structures on very poor ground conditions
- the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team of designers.
