The transmission system in Scotland includes 400kV, 275kV and 132kV networks that are each presently loaded close to their maximum capacity. Despite the limitations there is a desire for developers to connect additional wind energy in northern Scotland that will exacerbate the constraints that already exist.
Sinclair Knight Merz was asked to review the proposals prepared by the client’s planners for investment to overcome the forecast transmission constraints, using justifiable constraint costs.
Services provided by Sinclair Knight Merz:
-
Critical review of the justification for expansion plans and the allocation of costs
-
Calculated the cost constraints due to wind generation projects, taking into account the intermittency of the generation
-
The effect of the additional generation capacity and associated network on system losses in the client’s network
-
Determination of a defendable constrained energy cost for the client’s network in Scotland
-
Comparison with constraint costs
-
Reviewed power systems to demonstrate critical outages that justified investment requirements.
