
Sinclair Knight Merz provided a total project management service to Smorgon Steel for the engineering design, procurement, construction management and commissioning of a new steel rolling mill at Laverton, near Melbourne.
The $37 million rolling mill is housed in a 3 500 m2 factory and is fitted out with an 80 t/h billet reheating furnace, 16 stand rolling mill and billet handling crane. Ancillary equipment includes extensive water supply, treatment and cooling plant and mill scale separation equipment. Sinclair Knight Merz also carried out an upgrade of the 66 kV substation.
The EPCM role provided by Sinclair Knight Merz included:
- engineering design and documentation of civil, structural, mechanical and electrical works, including detailed design coordination with Italian mill equipment supplier, Danieli
- management of the construction of the building, and the installation of mechanical and electrical equipment
- liaison with Smorgon Steel production personnel to ensure production was not affected by construction activities
- commissioning of facilities and equipment.
