Sinclair Knight Merz and joint venture partner ARA carried out the engineering of a capacity upgrade for the ore haulage railway on Level 8 of Codelco’s El Teniente copper mine in Chile. The upgrade aimed to increase the railway’s capacity from 76,000 t/d to 126,000 t/d by 2004.
The firm’s role included transport simulations, train automation, DC distribution, underground infrastructure/services and a complete redesign of the communications system.
The major functions carried out by SKM included:
- Dynamic simulation of the mineral transportation system
- DC distribution systems - computational modelling to determine the new power requirements, locations and ratings of substations and design of the modifications to the existing overhead catenary system
- Locomotives, including an investigation into the repair of existing equipment and technical specifications for the purchase of new equipment
- Mineral transport cars, tele-operated loading and automatic unloading
- Train signalling and traffic control for automated train operation (unmanned)
- SCADA and communications systems
- Review of railroad design, incorporating dynamic train weighing, bearing temperature detection systems
- Development mining for the necessary services, infrastructure and maintenance facilities
- Implementation program
- Estimation of costs to ±10%
