The Clean Waterways Program (CWP) was established in response to public concerns over the environmental degradation of coastal waterways and the beaches of Sydney. Sinclair Knight Merz, in a joint venture with Montgomery Watson, formed Clean Water Consultants to provide environmental scientists and planners to be the CWP’s Environmental Services team.
The Environmental Services Team was involved in:
- assisting the CWP to develop and maintain a focus that was ecologically sustainable, fulfilled community expectations and sought to adopt the most appropriate solutions for improving environmental quality
- undertaking environmental impact studies on major CWP projects
- assisting managers within CWP to undertake the environmental assessment of smaller projects
- assisting managers in setting environmental goals and objectives for their projects, so it was clear the project was directed toward a demonstrable improvement in environmental quality.
Associated with this was the development of environmental performance indicators, or ways of measuring improvements to the environment. The team developed such indicators, assembled data collected from projects, and reported on performance.
