In another project the deck and infrastructure of the of the HMAS Tobruk was scanned whilst docked at Garden Island in Sydney. Sinclair Knight Merz Defence group from the SHIN OP centre in Victoria had won the contract to design and install an new davit on the upper deck of the Tobruk. Time was short, as the Tobruk has to sail in early August and the accurate location of the ship’s deck and superstructure was critical to ensure that the design of the new davit would fit when the Tobruk returns to base in four months time. All the required complex features were scanned over a two day period whilst coping with numerous delays due the ship being prepared for imminent departure.
Below is a photo of the area in question and the resulting 3 D point cloud of the same part of the upper deck

The Defence group are now in the process of designing the new infrastructure, confident in the knowledge that they have a very detailed and acuate digital data model available.
3D laser scanning represents a new and exciting addition to the Spatial group and the application of this technology has many applications across the many disciplines within SKM ‘s sphere of operations.
