Sinclair Knight Merz was engaged to act as Head Consultant for the detailed design of the HMAS Waterhen facilities modernisation project at Waverton on Sydney’s Harbour foreshore. HMAS Waterhen provides facilities for the Australian mine warfare forces, diving teams and fleet maintenance group.
Sinclair Knight Merz was responsible for the detailed design of two 175 m jetties for the berthing of craft up to 770 DWT. Consideration was also given to the requirements for berthing larger vessels (up to 2000 DWT) in the future. The piers consisted of steel tubular piles and a concrete deck structure. To ensure easy access for maintenance and future works the decks were designed with walk through service ducts along their entire length.
The contract also included a pontoon system for small boats, a slipway ramp and 300 m of rock revetment.
All concrete which might have contact with salt water used a waterproofing admixture to provide durability for a low maintenance design life of 50 years.
The involvement of Sinclair Knight Merz in the HMAS Waterhen Modernisation project brings the following benefits to your project:
-
in depth design experience in all forms of marine facility
-
specialist knowledge of naval services requirements and detailing
-
specialist understanding of concrete in the marine environment.
