Mekong River Bridge, Thailand - Laos Border

 Mekong River Bridge

Sinclair Knight Merz formed a joint venture with Maunsell Proprietary Limited to carry out feasibility studies, detailed design, contract documentation and project management for the first bridge across the Mekong River, connecting Thailand and Laos.

The design features a single post-tensioned concrete box girder structure 1174m long, carrying two lanes of road traffic and providing for a future railway line down the bridge centre. The overall extent of the works is 2.4km and includes the embankments, river bank protection and roadworks with a traffic changeover. The size, scope and nature of this project demanded tight overall organisational controls on the civil/structural/electrical groups involved in the design. This was particularly so in relation to the client's requirements with respect to Quality Assurance and the timing of the project. Delays on an extremely tight design phase could not be tolerated as the subsequent construction program was tied to the seasonal rainfall in the region.

The participation of Sinclair Knight Merz in the project brings the following benefits to your project:

  • in-house team with technical skills in bridge design supplemented by road, hydraulics and electrical expertise
  • quality system appropriate to the work and the client's requirements
  • management skills to bring a large diverse project to a successful conclusion on time.
