Study of the economic contribution of Melbourne Airport for the local, state and national economies.
Analysis involved survey of airport activities, analysis of freight industries, employment survey both on-site and off-site. Study of employment outcomes from individual airport activities (aircraft movements, etc).
Key results of the Study included:
- Melbourne Airport is home to over 150 businesses, employing more than 10,000 people who earned more than $520 million in annual wages
- Efficiency gains put in place at Melbourne Airport (which have resulted in higher factor productivity) have contributed significantly to jobs and production in Victoria.
- By 2002, these improvements have generated an estimated 5,000 additional jobs and added over $500m to Gross State Product, above what would have been achieved with average industry-wide
- The lack of a night-time curfew at Melbourne Airport contributes some $127 million in real State Product each year, and supports some 2,680 jobs statewide. By 2006/7 the lack of a curfew will generate $286 million and over 4,000 jobs
- Each domestic flight between Melbourne and Sydney generates 125 labour hours to operate, with the labour required to serve the annual volume of traffic equal to 821 equivalent full time employment positions.
