In June 2001, Sinclair Knight Merz in joint venture with Roberts & Schaefer, was appointed to undertake the EPCM of BHP Billiton’s new greenfields Mt Arthur North coal project in the Hunter Valley of NSW.

The scope of work included all site infrastructure and buildings (admin, bathhouse, workshops and ancillary buildings) as well as the Coal Handling Plant (CHP ) and a new 2 module, 1,200 tph Coal Preparation Plant (CPP).

This project was designed and managed under very strict environmental guidelines with respect to noise, dust, water management and visual impact. The project team carried out all design and procurement activities in Brisbane with all construction activities being managed on site at Muswellbrook. The project met a very tight deadline for commissioning of the Domestic Coal Stream to Macquarie Generation.

There was a significant materials handling component including twin ROM dump hoppers, two major stockpiles serviced by a stacker and a reclaim tunnel, 120,000tonne circular stacker and reclaim system, and an overland conveyor to the product stockpile and reclaim system.
