Royal Australian Navy: Air Weapons Magazine

The Air Weapons Magazine (AWM) on the Royal Australian Navy’s ANZAC class frigate is to undergo a refit requiring the inclusion of a Flexible Ordinance Stowage System (FOSS).  Torpedos and missiles are contained within the AWM.  The weapons are secured in chocks and mounted on rows of shock isolators.

The aim of this study was to assess the structural adequacy of the deck structure that supports the AWM under shock loading conditions and report on the stress levels developed during these shock events.  The results from the transient dynamic analysis provided ship designers with information on the adequacy of the existing structure, in addition to providing information on areas that may require stiffening or modification.
