Sinclair Knight Merz has been instrumental in the construction of Finucane Island Berth D, a major component of the marine works for BH P Billiton’s Port and Capacity Expansion (PACE) Project.
This new wharf comprises a 360m long loader structure, nine independent berthing dolphins, transfer and maintenance platforms, and a 150m long access bridge and conveyor trestle. Dredging works for the new facility included extending and deepening the pocket for the new berth, as well as deepening alongside the existing Berth C. Dredged material was pumped to a reclamation area, which forms a part of the land access to the new Berth D.
The marine works were procured under four contracts: dredging, pile and pile top supply, precast road plank and deck unit supply, and the main marine structure works. The contract split and timing were designed to manage interface issues and deliver the facility within tight program constraints.
The Berth D facility is designed to be fully integrated into the existing Berth C facility at a future date. This would provide for the existing Berth C shiploader to service Berth D and vice versa.
The design of the shiploader support structure, transfer platform and access bridge comprises a unique precasting and pile connection system. Precast headstocks combined with prefabricated pile tops and stressbar tie-downs minimise overwater work and provide for a significant degree of pile out-of-position. The access bridge deck and transfer platform deck construction make extensive use of precasting.
