 North Greenwich Transport Interchange

As a catalyst to the redevelopment of the Blackwall Peninsula (from its previous use as a major gasworks) a station was planned on the Jubilee Line Extension. The interchange is a fully integrated transport facility including a large bus station with commuter coach, taxi and private car drop-off/pick up points and a 1000-space park-and-ride car park. The station will be the main visitor access to the adjacent Millennium Dome.

Our role was lead consultant for the access road and structural and civil engineer for the interchange building, external works and car park.

The access road involved the design of a 1.2 km long dual-carriageway as advance works to enable access to the site which subsequently had to incorporate major design changes during construction caused by late changes in the brief due to the Millennium Dome.

The structure is single storey, curved both in plan and elevation. It consists of rectangular hollow section beams on a triangular grid supported on steel circular columns forming ‘trees’ of varying heights according to the level of the roof.

Structural design was complicated since part of the structure is supported on undisturbed ground and part on the deep station box of the Jubilee Line Station.
