Sinclair Knight Merz provided design and supervision support for the following components of the expansion of the 64 MW Olkaria Geothermal Power Generation Plant in Kenya – 

  • Power plant   
  • Steam field engineering   
  • Site civil works   
  • Switchyards   
  • Transmission

This project was a second stage expansion of geothermal power generation at the Olkaria geothermal project in Kenya, consisting of an integrated steam field and power plant of 64 MW capacity. 

Sinclair Knight Merz was also the overall project manager for the entire project.  Services provided by the firm included:

  • Steam field engineering - review, revision and issue for construction steam field engineering design and documentation; and supervision of steam field construction, commissioning, and acceptance testing   
  • Power plant engineering - review, revision and issue for international competitive bidding design and documentation for 2 x 32 MW geothermal power plant; and evaluation of bids and assisting the client with contract awards   
  • Design reviews and contract co-ordination - factory inspection of specialized plant and equipment; and supervision of construction and acceptance testing   
  • Project management - overall project coordination and management; cost control and project scheduling; and comprehensive technology and management training of client’s staff.
