The £9 million Phoenix Sixth Form College in Shepherd’s Bush, West London boasts an advanced hybrid steel and concrete frame. The hybrid propped cantilever design cleverly supports the entire structure above the ground with all the design elements working in unison together.
SKM provided civil and structural engineering design through the LSC Framework, working alongside project partners Bond Bryan and CPW.
The new high school is an architectural statement. The design brief called for an iconic design that would inspire 16-year old pupils to stay on and complete their A-levels. The building comprises a four storey building within the existing school grounds that defies gravity through the complex propped cantilever structural system. The College is visually striking within its local community with primary coloured fins that twist from the facade at raking angles. The College is due to open in summer 2011.
