The Products and Capacity Expansion (PACE) project for BHP Billiton Iron Ore is the second project Sinclair Knight Merz has developed as part of the Mine and Port Developments Joint Venture (MPDJV) with Fluor Australia in a 50/50 arrangement. In 2003, the MPDJV successfully developed and implemented the Area C “greenfields” project and associated infrastructure for BHP Billiton Iron Ore, in Western Australia.
The PACE project involved a staged development of port facilities to increase system capacity to respond to forecast increases in iron ore sales additional to BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s product mix.
Similar to the Area C project, the MPDJV was initially awarded the detailed feasibility studies of the PA CE project, which included the evaluation and cost estimation of a wide range of options for the upgrade of the existing port facilities. Following the selection of the preferred approach and project approval, the MPDJV was then awarded the implementation of the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM).
Major components of the PA CE project were:
- Development of a new Western Stockyard
- A major upgrade and enhancement of dust suppression systems
- Upgrading the under-harbour tunnel from 4,500 t/h to 10,000t/h
- Establishing an additional lump rescreening facility
- Addition of a new wharf and shiploader on Finucane Island.
