Northumberland College

 Northumberland College

Sinclair Knight Merz advised on the redevelopment of Northumberland College in Ashington.  A Transport Assessment was undertaken to support three outline planning applications for development on three of the College’s sites in the town. Planning permission was secured in July 2005.

Our work included an assessment of the traffic impact of the college, which has 62,000 students and staff, compared to the redevelopment proposals, plus an evaluation of public transport, pedestrian and cycle accessibility to the site.
A full accident analysis review of the local highway network adjacent to the College was conducted. This proved the acceptability of the access strategy proposed and in tandem with a comprehensive review of local transport policy which confirmed that the scale and development mix was appropriate.
