Currently the largest single phase new build college facility in the UK, York College is located on a prominent gateway site at the south western edge of the historic city.
The College will consolidate its existing facilities from two separate sites into one purpose built structure of up to four storeys. The new college will combine hi-tech amenities with workshops, a sports hall and lecture theatres to serve in excess of 12,000 students and 1000 staff.
Other facilities include a separate single storey nursery, all weather sports pitch, parking for 650 cars, and a through bus route.
The ground floor level is stepped (by means of varying height in-situ concrete retaining walls) to harmonise with the surrounding topography of the site and enhance accessibility from all directions. To mitigate the visual impact of the considerable car parking provision the main two level car park is recessed into the ground necessitating a range of earth retaining solutions.
