Sinclair Knight Merz was commissioned as principal engineering consultant to carry out the preliminary design, detailed design, documentation and construction inspection for the proposed Perth Airport Central project. The project, which has since been shelved, involved the development of a large district shopping complex on 16 ha of "greenfields" airport land.
The objective of the project was to transform Perth Airport into an enterprise that takes full advantage of its unique location, attributes and facilities. It was designed to become a base for companies trading with Asia, along with innovative services for the West Australian community.
The project involved the civil engineering of all services, roadways, drainage and carparking for 2200 vehicles, along with extensive traffic engineering, including the design of a major grade separated intersection. In addition, an electrical engineering component was involved.
One of the most innovative aspects of Stage One of the project was to be the "Power Centre" retailing complex, which was to have involved a 38 000 m2 bulk retail complex. Further stages of the project were planned, including a championship golf course, sports stadium and a hotel complex.
