Queensland Fertilizer Project

 Queensland Fertilizer Project

Sinclair Knight Merz joined with Thiess Contractors to design and construct a Beneficiation Plant for WMC Fertilizers Ltd’s Queensland Fertilizer Project. The Queensland Fertilizer project produces 1 Mt/a of high analysis fertilizer for domestic and export markets.

The phosphate rich slurry produced by the plant is mixed with sulphuric acid in the phosphoric acid plant before the granulation into MAP and DAP fertilizer. The project included interfacing with chemical and other sub-plants including ammonia, acid, steam, materials handling and infrastructure.

The firm’s involvement in the project consisted of the provision of tender design, material and equipment lists to the contractor for estimating, followed by the design, construction support, commissioning and testing of the plant.

Upon winning the contract, Sinclair Knight Merz provided process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, control and instrumentation design; commissioning; and other post design operations for the plant. A feature of the design was an innovative flow sheet which produced capital savings to the project and allowed a reduction in construction period.

The involvement of Sinclair Knight Merz in the Queensland Fertilizer Project brings the following benefits to your project:

  • experience in chemical plant requirements and operating conditions
  • experience in slurry pumping with non Newtonian properties
  • the ability to work in a fast-paced design and construction team.
