The project included environmental assessment, environmental management training and implementation of environmental measures as part of a demonstration project of railway rehabilitation in Russia. The client was Technum Consult.

It included an assessment of the environmental impact of the modernisation of 207km of railway, including an audit of workshops, quarries and sleeper production plants, preparation of waste disposal and environmental management plans and supervision of implementation of works.

The work was in two phases. Phase one included the environmental assessment of capital renewal works and audit of suppliers, and methods for demonstration of sections on the Moscow-Krasnoye and St Petersburg-Moscow line. The assessments included ecology, water quality, soil and geology, hydrogeology, waste disposal, noise and dust. It also included the training of environmental staff from the Ministry of Railways and the railway companies in Brussels.

Phase two assessment work involved dealing with specific problems of ballast contamination.
