Sinclair Knight Merz undertook an environmental assessment of three coal mines in Upper Silesia, Poland, as part of a multi-disciplinary project involving the production of redevelopment plans, economic, social and financial measures which will provide a model for the sector. The client was Technum Consult.
Our team audited mine sites and produced strategic redevelopment plans based on our experience in mine closure, rehabilitation and site redevelopment in the UK coal sector. The strategy was presented to a steering committee, comprised of Directors of the mines and mine holding company, representatives of the World Bank, local and regional Councillors, environmental regulators and other stakeholders.
‘Hands on’ training for mine personnel in environmental management of mine closure and evaluation of costs of mine site rehabilitation was critical to the project.
