Sinclair Knight Merz staff provided all engineering and project management services for the reconstruction of the client’s Finegand works (Balclutha). The five chain mutton and lamb slaughter board had been destroyed by fire.
The 2700 m2 slaughter board, which was on the top floor of a three storey building, had been totally destroyed and significant damage had also occurred on the second storey and in surrounding areas.
The project was completed within a tight time frame as the client wished to have the facility operational within three months from the fire, in time for the coming season.
Sinclair Knight Merz staff set up a team on site to provide overall project and construction management.
The insurance loss adjusters required the construction work to be competitively bid. Contracts were awarded either on a reimbursable rate basis or on a lump sum basis.
Construction was sufficiently complete to allow export processing of lambs on two chains just 13 weeks from the date of the fire.
The involvement of Sinclair Knight Merz staff in this project demonstrates its skills in the following areas:
- experience in the design of meat slaughter and processing facilities
- the ability to manage the design and construction of a project within a tight timeframe
