Scoping and Coordination Workshop

Aerial Electricity Distribution Network Data Capture Project, Tas, Australia

Data Capture Project

Sinclair Knight Merz established a database of the client’s aerial electricity distribution system. It forms the basis of the client’s network asset and operational management systems and was based on, and interfaced with, existing electronic systems. The project involved the physical capture of the GIS position and recording a range of attributes for each pole and conductor span in Aurora’s state-wide network.

The project involved a series of components undertaken by various internal groups and external consultants. The extensive range of stakeholders included:

  • the client’s internal project manager; project team; internal electronic systems managers; external electronic systems consultant; and internal system users managing various functions at various locations throughout Tasmania
  • the client’s customers
  • the Sinclair Knight Merz project team and its field-capture sub-consultant.

To maximise the beneficial outcomes of the project, Sinclair Knight Merz proposed, organised and facilitated a two-day project scoping and coordination workshop, which was the initial task of the project. The workshop involved representatives of all stakeholders and focussed on the overall project "big-picture" values and the optimisation of technical and administrative inputs to achieve these aims. The workshop addressed outcome expectations; roles and interfaces; "needs and fears"; and dependent "success requirements" of each of the parties.

The outcome of the workshop was a solid baseline for the management of the disparate components of the project. It demonstrates the capability of Sinclair Knight Merz in the use of consultation processes to enhance project outcomes.
