The Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA ) facility at Weipa has relied on one 30 year old shiploader for bauxite outloading, supplying two alumina refineries in Gladstone. The lack of redundancy for bauxite loading at Weipa was seen as being a significant risk to RTA alumina and aluminium operations.
The existing wharf at Weipa needed to be strengthened and lengthened for the new (2nd) shiploader and a new mooring dolphin was required. New outloading conveyors, designed for significantly higher wind loads than the original structures at Weipa, were also needed.
Significant effort was put into the specification, procurement, expediting and commissioning of the new shiploader, which was designed in Austria and manufactured in Korea.
An increased emphasis on environmental controls led to stringent requirements for dust control and spillage control. Integration of the modern control system with a fairly old existing control system required careful implementation.
SKM worked with Bechtel, who managed the construction phase of the project, to successfully deliver the project on programme and under budget.
Main installations/activities of the project included:
- Wharf extension and strengthening
- Outloading conveyor
- 2 conveyor transfer stations
- Dust control
- New bauxite shiploader
- New substation
- Control system, including integration with existing control system
- Detailed cost estimation to RTA estimating system requirements
- Detailed programming to RTA requirements.
