Since the Hail Creek Coal Mine started production in August 2003, its operations have ramped up capacity from 5.5Mtpa product coal to 6Mtpa product coal and RT CA decided in mid 2004 to expand the mine output to 8Mtpa.

In August 2004, SKM was awarded the EPCM contract to manage the mine expansion. A significant variation to the scope of work was made in February 2005 to duplicate the existing coal preparation plant thereby resulting in a CPP facility with a potential output of 12Mtpa product coal. However, other facilities in the coal chain including the mining operation, were to remain at 8Mtpa capacity, pending further studies of a Stage 3 Expansion scenario to increase the total mine output to 12Mtpa.

The stage 2 expansion project scope of work included:

  • A second P&H 9020 dragline
  • Additional mining equipment
  • Duplication of the CPP
  • Upgrade of coal handling facilities and product stockpile
  • Installation of the stage 2 Co-disposal facility and the expansion of the mine infrastructure buildings and services to support an 8Mtpa product coal operation.
