Bradford Schools for the Future

Salt, Tong and Buttershaw schools form the first phase of a Private Finance Initiative to renew or renovate the majority of Bradford Metropolitan District Councils existing school stock.

The redevelopment involves the construction of three new schools on land within the existing school boundaries.  The existing schools are to be demolished when the new schools are completed and equipped.

The schools are steel framed acting compositely with precast concrete walls and internal blockwork walls.  The floor soffit’s (PC units) are left exposed to utilise the thermal mass to assist with temperature regulation of the school and thus reduce future running costs and energy demands for heating and cooling of the schools.

Bradford is an area where extensive coal mining has occurred n the past and both Tong and Buttershaw schools are situated in areas of previous coal working.  Mining remediation also forms part of the engineering challenges for the project.  The schools are due for completion in spring 2009.
