
Sinclair Knight Merz was commissioned to assist in the investigation and construction of a stand-alone whey protein concentrate plant. The ultra-filtration plant was designed to process up to 730 m3 of whey per day. Following ultra-filtration the product is evaporated and spray dried. The powder is blended prior to packing in 25 kg bags. Key features included:
- planning
- development of the detailed process P&IDs
- detailed assessment of services requirements including electrical, water, chilled water, steam, compressed air and CIP
- detailed design of building works, including electrical and mechanical building services
- detailed pipework design
- preparation of specifications, calling tenders, tender assessment, tender award and contract administration for specialist process plant items such as the ultra-filtration, spray drier, powder handling, and powder packing plant
- preparation of specifications and calling bids for the purchase of specialist equipment items including sanitary valves, instruments, stainless steel piping and fittings
- preparation of contract documents, calling tenders, tender assessment, tender award, construction monitoring and contract administration for on-site construction contracts
- project management assistance.
The study phase was undertaken over a six month period with the construction phase being completed within a 12 month period.
