Incentives for Sustainable Buildings
Abstract
Sustainable buildings are buildings which:
-
enhance the quality of life and offer customer satisfaction
-
offer flexibility and the potential to cater for user changes in the future
-
provide and support desirable natural and social environments
-
maximise the efficient use of resources and energy.
The design and delivery of sustainable buildings requires a holistic and multi-disciplinary team approach to produce cost-effective and practical solutions. It requires a confidence to depart from the norm. Cost consultants play a major role in the delivery of sustainable buildings by quantifying the financial rewards of smarter design to clients, developers and property managers/owners and by providing guidance to the design team to optimise the whole of life costs of a building.
This paper outlines some of the incentives, legislation and tools which are driving the development of sustainable buildings in Australia.
