Low Cost Load Testing

Abstract

As part of an investigation for upgrade works to strengthen the existing Kings Wharf, Suva, Fiji, a series of load tests was carried out on key structural elements that will be utilized in the upgraded structure. Two features of these tests were the utilization of containers and a large forklift from within the port to provide low cost readily available kentledge and the testing of piles with minimum separation from the wharf structure. This avoided any requirement to bring in or manufacture conventional concrete kentledge, which kept the costs involved to a minimum. Reinstatement of the wharf after the tests were completed was minimal, with the result the test area of the wharf was closed off for four days only.
