Maintenance of unsealed roads
Abstract
A series of maintenance principles and treatments has been developed for the unsealed roads in the Shoalwater Bay Training Area, a military training area north of Rockhampton, Qld. These roads and tracks continue to service a wide variety of vehicle types, and large numbers of vehicle movements during military exercises.
Treatments for drainage, road geometry, erosion control, revegetation, materials handling and management are essential elements of the maintenance process. These treatments place an emphasis on lasting solutions to maintenance problems.
These treatments have been tested extensively and have performed well under extraordinary traffic loadings. The benefits to councils are more effective and economic maintenance of unsealed roads and progressive upgrading of these essential community facilities.
