Opportunities for Structural/Civil Engineers
Abstract
Sustainable buildings are buildings which:
- enhance the quality of life and offer customer satisfaction;
- offer flexibility and the potential to cater for user changes in the future;
- provide and support desirable natural and social environments, and;
- maximise the efficient use of resources and energy.
The design and delivery of sustainable buildings requires a holistic and multi-disciplinary team approach to produce cost-effective and practical solutions. It requires a confidence to depart from the norm. Structural and Civil Engineers, as a key part of the design and project management team, can make a significant contribution to the delivery of sustainable buildings. This paper provides an overview of some of the opportunities for Structural and Civil Engineers with case studies for illustration.
