Transport in Sydney Today

Abstract

The future of Sydney’s transport system and how it operates has largely been determined by past transport and land use decisions, which are reflected in the current use and today’s transport networks. Twenty five years from now, Sydney will look and operate much as it does today. As the future unfolds, sustainable policy decisions will need to continue the battle to balance the competing pressures of the continuing growth in travel demand, of overcoming car dependency, of improving commercial efficiency and of protecting the quality of life and of the environment. The key areas through which this is most likely to be achieved are:

  • a shift to greater public transport use
  • travel efficiency gains in all modes through the application of technology
  • more and better information available to transport users when making their travel decisions.
