Progress to implement Sustainable Development
Abstract
Making genuine progress to implement Sustainable Development - A regional sustainability framework
Governments around Australia are progressively embracing the concept and principles sustainable development, endeavouring to improve the economic, social and environmental performance of cities, regions and states by adopting new and innovative forms of development. However, progress has been relatively slow and incremental, with difficulties experienced in translating the concept of sustainable development into practice at any substantive scale. This paper describes a regional sustainability framework that moves beyond the broad definitions of sustainable development to provide more specific guidance to those who invest, work or live in regions of Australia. It provides a basis for developing clear strategies for sustainable development and a basis for evaluating progress.
