Communications
Expertise in communications within Sinclair Knight Merz has resulted from a significant history of service in the telecommunications, broadcasting and telemetry fields. Our experts assist our clients to design and implement the communications infrastructure that best suits its needs and local conditions.
For distribution applications, we have employed combinations of power line carrier, telephone (PSTN, PSDN, ISDN), pilot circuits, dedicated or trunked VHF/UHF radio (including spread spectrum and tropo-scatter), fibre optic cables (OPGW, ADSS, and wrap), cellular phone, and ripple control signals.
We have assisted clients in liaison with regulatory authorities for licensing matters and, where necessary, for the approval of new equipment.
With the advent of two-way communication on distribution power circuits, great promise lies ahead for future Distribution Automation and Demand Side Management applications at the customer level for functions such as remote meter reading, selective control of customer loads, surveillance of customer installations, and customer control over/choice of electricity rates.
